“Every artist was first an amateur.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy April!

Last month, I completed my training for yoga nidra, a guided practice that promotes deep relaxation for body, mind, and spirit. Part of our final assignment was to record ourselves guiding yoga nidra and post it online where people can listen to it. Our teacher Jana wanted us to learn the process of recording and editing, as well as have a simple way for her to listen and evaluate. I published mine on Insight Timer (a wonderful free meditation app.) You can listen to it here if you’d like!

The recording I created was not perfect, but I am proud of myself for completing it and getting it out in the world. I had to learn how to use different programs to remove background noise and add in music. If I wanted to be critical of myself, I could find many reasons that this was “not yet ready” to be published. I could have worded my script better, I could have recorded myself again for improved audio quality, or could have done a better job of editing sound… At the end of the day, for me, I didn’t want perfectionism to get in the way of completing my project. I learned a lot for ways to improve in the future.

For many of us, perfectionism or “not feeling ready” can keep us from moving forward with things we want to do. Of course we should put quality and effort into our work. At the same time, the simple act of creating something is such a wonderful accomplishment, even if it’s an amateur attempt.

I know some people who have been wanting to do things for years, but never quite let themselves because they don’t feel ready or “good enough” yet. Others are unafraid to try what they are curious about, and gain more expertise in the act of execution than if they stayed in preparation mode for any longer. I understand everyone’s timeline is different. I wish everyone the courage to put themselves out there more. We all start somewhere, and can grow so much from the act of starting.

We have lots of cool things coming up in April, including a limited time Spring Sale on classes! I’m also very excited to share we will be hosting a 200-Hour Teacher Training later this year - see details below :)

Take care and stay healthy!

With Love + Gratitude,
