“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”
–Henry Miller

Happy April! It seems like so long ago now, but just a few weeks ago at the beginning of March, I was very lucky to travel to Iceland. It was a winter wonderland, with amazing sights like glaciers, ice caves, geysers and a fortuitous display of vibrant Northern Lights on a clear night in the city.

Travel has always been an important part of my life. Growing up, my parents took us on trips to the Philippines, as they felt it was important for us to know and experience where our family was from. In college, instead of a traditional summer internship, I opted to do a volunteer project for the endangered leatherback sea turtles in a remote town in Costa Rica. I spent several months backpacking and doing volunteer work abroad after realizing corporate America was not for me. I’d choose a plane ticket over a designer handbag any day.

One of the greatest things I’ve gained from traveling is the ability to see how people around the world live very different lives. In Iceland, I was so impressed with their connection to nature, and how environmentally conscious they are. The entire country is powered mostly by geothermal energy. They highly discourage single-use plastic and have clean drinking water available from any tap.

Going to a different place is a great way to start thinking beyond ourselves, valuing different perspectives and honoring the natural world. We can grow in this way through yoga and meditation as well, by trying new and different things. You can change your routine with a different type of class or offering. I hope you continue to find more ways to grow in your practice, and take opportunities to travel whenever you are able.

We have wonderful classes and community events coming up this month, including Restorative Yoga & Massage on Friday evening, and a free community Restorative Yoga class this Sunday. I’m excited to share we’ll be hosting another 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training this Fall. Hope you are enjoying the Spring weather, and hope to see you soon at the studio!

With Love + Gratitude,
